How to map specialized experience on a USAJOBS announcement
A practical method for reading specialized experience on a USAJOBS announcement and mapping it to duties, hours, and evidence you can actually verify.
Read the announcement, not a rumor
Specialized experience is how an agency decides whether your past work is close enough in level, scope, and recency to the job on the announcement. It usually lives in the qualifications section, often as “one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade,” followed by examples that look like the position’s duties.
Treat those examples as evidence you must be able to support — not as phrases to sprinkle into a résumé. If you did not perform the work, do not claim it.
A mapping method that stays honest
- Copy the specialized-experience paragraph and each duty that the announcement treats as qualifying.
- For each item, name the employer, title, dates, and hours per week where you actually did related work.
- Write one or two duty statements in your own words that a supervisor could confirm. Include tools, volume, or authority only if they are true.
- Mark each item as direct (you performed it), related (adjacent but not established), or absent (no support). Absent items stay absent.
Hours per week matter because specialized experience is often judged as substantial, not occasional. Series and grade on prior federal jobs help reviewers place the work; private-sector roles still need dates and hours.
